ASTi's Neil Waterman, alongside Andy Schneider of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, will deliver a presentation titled, "Enhancing Standard Phraseology in ab initio Pilot Training through Next-Generation Technologies" at the International Civil Aviation English Association (ICAEA) Conference on September 19, 2023. The three-day conference starts on September 18, 2023 and will take place at the Dedeman Hotel in Istanbul, Türkiye.
The presentation highlights the results of a two-year academic study that Embry-Riddle conducted with ASTi's support. Specifically, it investigates the efficacy of new technologies in their roles teaching new pilots proper English aviation phraseology. These new technologies include artificial intelligence (AI), automatic speech recognition (ASR), hyper-realistic text to speech (TTS), and natural language processing (NLP), which collaborate to provide cutting-edge tools for this specific type of training.
This comprehensive lecture will cover the full timeline of this large-scale, experimental collegiate flight training program. It contains early design and implementation struggles, midstream program adaptations and, finally, the team's conclusions about their efforts in standard phraseology training for over 1,200 English L1 and L2 ab initio pilots. The presenters will also provide a hands-on demonstration of this training program, allowing participants to experience virtual-reality (VR) videos, an automated phraseology training application and ASTi's Simulated Environment for Realistic ATC (SERA).
